Mr. Sad and the Kohen Gadol

We continued hearing the story of Chanukah:
In Yerushalayim, there was a beautiful house called the Beit Hamikdash.  It was Hashem's house.
The Kohen Gadol helper kept it clean and tidy.

King Antiyochus didn't like the Jewish people serving Hashem.  He sent his soldiers to mess it up.
It is not nice to mess up other people's houses.

Mendel went to get Mr. Sad to put next to the Kohen Gadol.

We felt so sad that our beautiful Menorah was knocked down.
The Macabee's were super brave to chase away the Greeks.
They didn't want King Antiyochus to tell them what to do.

Kayle and Marnie help tidy up the Beit Hamikdash.

More fun from today:
Hannah and Marnie built a very tall Menorah.

Kayle and Sender made Chanukah cookies.

Sender set the oven for 4 minutes.

They saved the cookies for the Chanukah party...

Sender doubled up his dreidels.

Hannah made a dreidel tower.

Kayle and Sender look at our pictures of the week; Henny choosing fruit for fruit family.
Thank you for choosing and bringing delicious fruit this week!

The Science of Burning Oil

Today we talked about how the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) would light the Menorah every day in the Beit Hamikdash (Temple).

We had a look at how oil burns, using cotton wool, oil and a glass jar:

The children helped roll a wick.

We placed it in a jar, but it sunk down into the oil.

We thought about how to hold it up....a piece of silver foil!
We poked a hole to fit the wick through the middle.

But it still wouldn't light.  Morah thought that we need to thin out the wick...

Yes!  That's what it needed!  The wick started to burn!

And the flame got bigger!
So beautiful!

The children were proud of our achievements :)

Dreidel patterning!
A great mathematical concept.

Wax and water art:
Today we drew with candles...it was challenging for the children to draw without seeing their work.

But it all became worth it when they covered it with water color, and their drawing was revealed!

Chanukah Fun!

We are starting to get ready for the next Chag, Chanukah!
The children loved setting up the Menorah.

With intention, Sender used the red ones.

Kayle created a pattern with red and blue.

Henny pretended to light the Menorah.

Kayle made a rainbow with the dreidels.

Sender made a pile of latkes.

Mendel cut his latkes into five pieces.

The children collaborated in the building corner.

They are very proud of their final product!

A visit from the dentist

Today we had a visit from the dentist.  Ms. Colleen came with her dog, 'Biscuit', and told us all about keeping our teeth healthy.
The children listened beautifully.

The children helped Ms. Colleen brush Biscuits teeth.

More fun from today:
We rolled our pine cones in glue and glitter.

To make them sparkle...

Sender noticed the train tracks were in the shape of an S.

Ella let Hannah do some homework.
All great writing practice :)
