Our study of different artists has been a long term project with several steps. We were inspired by Gustav Klimt's Tree of Life painting and we started this project weeks ago. Now, after everything has dried, we are ready to put on some finishing touches. From this work, new ideas were sparked. For example, we added hand painted birdhouses today and now the children want to add birds to the tree.
Likewise, after looking at Van Gogh's use of layering many applications of paint, we have waited until the canvas was completely dry before we added another layer.
Step One: painting the background - how do we use blue, black and white to create a night sky? The children were able to see how mixing these basic colors made their painting "look real."
Step Two: adding the second layer - the details of the night sky. They combined what they saw in VanGogh's night with the sky in their imaginations.
We will be sharing more and more of these details with you!
