What happened on this Rainy Day?

Today was filled with activity despite the rain. We encouraged the children to "sign-in" as they entered the class which encouraged them to find their names in print and follow the directions. A few children were able to do this without adult support  but most needed some adult assistance. I am confident that they will all be "signing in" independently by the end the week.

The children were totally engaged with writing in the journals after lunch.  Everyone chose to participate.

We started talking about Chanukah today. I introduced the topic by contrasting light and dark.  They identified that at night the sky was filled with many stars and one moon.  The crescent moon shape brought up an association: "it looks like a banana."

A few children brought in books about Chanukah. They were so excited to have Morah Shirel read to them. Thank you for so much for sharing your books from home. We are keeping close track of them.  If you can, please send in an object (a menorah, photo, picture from a catalog, box of candles, etc.) that is connected to Chanukah. The children love sharing things from home and it makes the connections to the holiday more meaningful. Please don't send in valuable or breakable items!

Other fun things we did today:                                                                                                     Organized a collection of sea creatures and rocks, built with magna-tiles, practiced cutting and gluing skills through creating wonderful abstract designs on paper. And....

We went on an  bear hunt! (based on the book We're Going on a Bear Hunt  by Helen Oxenbury and Michael Rosen.)

We practiced breathing and stretching using basic yoga...

and we got to play indoors with the large cars.

Morah Shirel and I are amazed at the connections they are making and an increase in their independent behaviors, including: signing in, cleaning up the room, clearing the table after lunch and using the bathroom/washing hands with less and less supervision.

Equally as important, we heard a child say," Oh, I'll make room for you," when the table was getting crowded and another child wanted to join. These are precious moments!
